Although Lester McKiernan has been director of the Six-Mile Regional Library District for 15 years, he hasn't lost his knack for helping patrons. He did it just last week when other members of the staff were occupied. It fits his commitment to the profession he pursued at the University of Alabama and jobs that led him from Iowa to Oklahoma, Illinois and Texas.

Like many other not-for-profits, we are always trying to update things with limited funding. It takes a creative person to be able to find, write for and get these public moneys that aren't available to everyone   -Von Nida

Add another honor for Metairie Park Country Day's Matt Derenbecker and Kentwood's Ronneka Robertson. Derenbecker and Robertson each have been chosen as the Outstanding Player on the Class 1A All-State boys and girls basketball teams selected by a panel of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Mike McGuire of Country Day and Kandace Mote of Oak Grove were selected claimed Coach of the Year, respectively, for the boys and girls teams.

One big thing about Matt was that he brought an attitude to us, a winning attitude   -Mike McGuire

The newly formed Montrose Land Defense Coalition has made its first official stand. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, about 100 marchers headed east on West Alabama Street to voice their opposition to the loss of trees they fear will occur if H-E-B Grocery moves forward with plans to locate a new store at the former site of the Wilshire Village apartments. "We have a chance to make a big difference," said resident Peter Ewing as he compared Montrose to other parts of the city.

The mayor of the small West Alabama town of Forkland has been jailed twice in the past month. In late January, Mayor Eddie Woods was arrested in Greene County where he lives after allegedly not complying with a Judge's order to turn over paperwork that is evidence in a misappropriation of funds investigation. Checks signed by Woods show he allegedly transferred money from the Gasoline Tax Revenue account , which is lawfully earmarked for road repairs only and placed those dollars into the city's general f

The state is considering a claim that the University of West Alabama should pay more than $5 million for a canceled dormitory project. The state's Board of Adjustment is scheduled to consider a claim filed over the work by Capstone Development Corp. of Birmingham. Capstone Development said it worked on a plan to build dormitories and apartments at the campus in Livingston, but the project was called off.
